Dazzling performances allrounder Robin Morris and debutant Biswa Bijayee Chandra Chuda Mohapatra propelled Orissa to an innings and 234-run win over Assam on the penultimate day of their four-day Ranji Trophy East Zone match at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack today. This was 30th overall win in a total of 152 Ranji Trophy matches for Orissa and 17th win in 42 matches against Assam.
Batting with aggression, host Orissa piled up a massive total of 511 after captain Sanjay Raul won the toss and opted to bat. Mohapatra became the third Orissa batsman to score a century on debut, hitting 109 (194 balls, 11x4, 4x6).
It could have been three hundreds for the home team if Pravanjan Mullick and Morris had not fell for 96 (258b, 6x4) and 90 (146b, 6x4, 2x6) respectively. Orissa started the proceedings on a sparkling note with Mohapatra and P Jayachandra building a partnership of 182 runs for the opening wicket.
Jayachandra passed 500 runs in first-class matches before getting dismissed for a 130-ball 80 (7x4, 1x6). Orissa registered another three-figure partnership in the innings with Mullick and Morris stitching together 168 runs for the fifth-wcket. Stumper Gautam Gopal joined the run feast, cracking a 74-ball 62 (8x4, 1x6).
In reply, Assam were skittled out for 119 and conceded a first-innings lead of 392 runs. Forced to follow on, the visitors folded up for 158 in their second innings. Morris proved himself a fine allrounder as he followed his batting feat with a match haul of 10 wickets for 81 runs, which included a carrer-best five for 35 in the second innings.
